Verse G D C G Ridin’ on this city bus my thoughts begin to wonder. G D C D G Though I’m starin’ out at grey concrete,my mind sees mountains yonder. G D C G Even though that diesel smoke burns hot within my nose, G D C D G I am smelling evergreen pine trees and mountain laurel groves. G D ‘Where that crystal mountain water tumbles down the green hillsides C G D In my home in West Virginia where the people live with pride. G D Though I only see those mountains in my memories today, C G D G I’m leavin’ this ol’ city and I’m goin’ home to stay. Goin’ home to stay. G D C G Outside this dirty window, I can see folks push and shove, G D C D G And I don’t see any sign of what’s called simple human love. G D C G Their faces are as somber as the cold skyscrapers there, G D C D G And those people like the buildings show no outward sign of care. G D C G Now it’s time to leave this bus and start another day G D C D G At my job here in the city, but down in my heart I pray G D C G That my trips back home will soon not just take place within my mind, G D C D G But that I will soon be walking though those mountains and the pines.
